DIY Kids Halloween Costumes

It’s that time of year again. The weather is getting cooler, the days are getting shorter and the leaves are changing colors. Back to school, you say? Yea, I guess that is happening, too. But what I was referring to is HALLOWEEN!

October will be here soon and if you’re a creative type, you will definitely want to create your kids own Halloween costumes. But whatever shall they be? A witch? How about a cat? Maybe a corn on the cob! Here are some examples of DIY costumes that you can create for your kids this year:

Peacock

PEACOCK

What you will need:

  1. Orange tights
  2. Blue/Teal leotard/onesie/body suit
  3. Peacock feathers
  4. Teal feathers
  5. Teal stretchy sequin material (to make a headband and belt)

To make the Peacock feather fan, measure enough of the teal stretchy sequin material to go around the waist to create a belt. Hot glue the teal feathers to the back of the belt. Once dried, glue the peacock feathers on top. To fasten the belt, you can tie the ends, sew them together or add a sparkly brooch.

You can find this project on: http://creativelychristy.blogspot.com/2011/08/peacock-costume-how-to_02.html

Octopus

OCTOPUS

What you will need:

  1. Four pairs of tights or socks
  2. Rivets and buttons
  3. Cotton
  4. Ribbon

First, cut the tights or socks, so they are all the same length. You will then sew a seam on the inside of the toes so they create a point. At this point, you can start stuffing each of your “tentacles” and sew up the top. Using your rivets and buttons, hot glue them to your tentacles to make them look like suction cups. Measure the ribbon around waist to create a belt that you will attach the tentacles by sewing them on. You can tie the belt, sew it, or add a brooch.

Godzilla

GODZILLA

What you will need:

  1. Hoodie
  2. Green felt (different shade)
  3. Googly eyes
  4. Fabric glue

Using your felt, cut it in small scales that you will glue onto the hoodie. This will take approximately 300 scales, depending on the size of the hoodie. Once the entire hoodie has been covered with felt scales, set flat to dry. Once dried, attach the eyes to the top of the hood portion of the sweater. To make a tail, use a piece of string and roll circular pieces of felt and glue to attach. Attach to the back of the sweater using the fabric glue.

Sock Monkey

SOCK MONKEY

Note: This is probably best for children who still fit in one piece sleepers

What you will need:

  1. 6 pairs of work socks (this depends on the size of your kid)
  2. One piece sleeper/footie pajamas

This project involves a little more sewing than the others. For a step by step process, see the entire project here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Sock-Monkey-costume-for-toddler/
