Bring your Child to Work Day Activity Guide Thursday , April 25 2019

With Bring Your Child to Work just around the corner we’re bringing you the best activities to keep the little ones occupied throughout the day (while learning all about how hard their mommies and daddies work!)

But first, a little anecdote. When I was ten my aunt Anne Marie took me to ‘take your child to work day’. Her boss was on a work trip and she thought it would be an easy day. I was enthralled by our trip to her office through grand central station and the enormous high rise she worked out of. She introduced me to everyone, the office was dark and so quiet. Throughout the day her boss became more and more demanding. He called constantly and continued to make what seemed like crazy requests. At the end of what turned out to be an exhausting day (and very boring day for me)  she sent him a fax (this was the 90’s) of documents he requested. Taking a black sharpie, she scribbled over the last page in giant letters “I QUIT”. We left the office and got ice cream, and that was my very first true office experience and might be why I chose an entrepreneurial path 🙂

So, if you’re the boss I suggest having some activities planned (and respecting that Take Your Child to Work Day is a light work day for all) and if you’re a parent/office manager or just want some peace and quiet on April 25th you’re going to want to implement a few of our ideas:

1. Pretend Interviews: The kiddos are there to learn about the business world so why not let them be ‘in charge’, reverse roles and have them give you a mock interview! Explain what a job interview is, how to present yourself (handshakes, eye contact) and what job you’ll  be fake-applying for. Allow them some time to write questions and sit down in the bosses chair. Have your child take lead and start the interview. YOU can play it super profesh and set a good example or have some fun with it and show them what a bad interview looks like (be nervous, look down etc). Either way it will be hilarious to let your child decide if you got the job!

2. Office Supply Scavenger Hunt: Yes you will have crazy kids running down the hallway but that’s what Take Your Child to Work Day is all about. Make it rhyme. Make it age appropriate and understandable. Give out prizes to each team. Keep it interactive (e.g. they need to solve a riddle and send the answer via email to the office manager, wait for a reply with their next  clue etc.). Incorporate traditional office-y places like the water cooler – “You need to cool down if you want to be ruler, find your next clue at the water _____”.

3. Crafts and Coloring: If you work in a creative industry, add a little creativity to the day. Architect’s office can let kids color in old CAD drawings (these can even become really awesome office wall art). If you work in fashion let them design their own clothes or make art with fabric scraps. We did a fabulus activity for DKNY’s Take Your Child to Work Day where the kids decorated tote bags. We provided the bags, textile markers, stencils and teachers while DKNY provided hands-on parents and some really luxe patches.

4. Start a Business: Create teams and have each team start a new product based business. They need to choose a product (it can be realistic or totally imaginary) and design it. Each person in the office should have fake money (you can even brand this with your company logo).  The teams can then visit staff members to try and sell their product. This can involve intense price negotiations (because let’s face it, children are way better at negotiating than adults) and the team who makes the most at the end of the day wins. You can also have prizes for “most imaginative” and “future CEO”.

Of course we at The Fashion Class are happy to help with any Take Your Child to Work Day needs. We can provide crafts, hand sewing, entrepreneurship and marketing lessons and so much more! Our talented staff are trained to work with children and we can keep your day organized and stress free! Contact us today 646.329.6663.
