Dressing & Style

March 29, 2012

Choose the right Prom dress for your body type

Perhaps the reason why so many girls have such a hard time finding a dress for Prom is because finding one that makes you feel beautiful can be straight up difficult with all the options with cut, color, embellishments, size, proportions; the list goes on and on!  The most important thing to remember when picking out a dress for Prom or any other occasion, is to be absolutely sure that it’s one you feel great in; there’s nothing more attractive than confidence, and wearing a dress that makes you feel fabulous is a surefire way to achieve this!

Here is a quick guide that will hopefully help you get a better idea of what will flatter your body the most.  Know what your assets are and what parts of your body you love and show them off!

For Inverted Triangle body types (those with broad shoulders and smaller hips), try to look for something strapless or a halter top with a revealing neckline.  Try to go for something form-fitting around the waist to accentuate your hips and give you the illusion of more of an hourglass figure.  Stay away from scoop necks or jewel necks, which will make your shoulders look broader.  This is a great opportunity to show off a piece of statement jewelry!

We love this colorful dress by Riva

For Lean Column body types (those who are thin with small shoulders and small hips), your height may play a role in how you choose your dress.  If you’re short, elongate your silhouette by showing off your legs; asymmetrical hem lines help to elongate the body as well.  If you’re taller, a dress with a details, a pattern, or a print will help break up this long line and add some definition to your shape.  Empire waists or dresses that are fitted at the waist are great for tall or short thin girls and will accentuate your small curves.  A-line dresses are great for shorter girls while body-skimming sheath dresses work well for taller girls.  V-necks, jewel necks, and halter top necklines look great with this figure!

This high-low hemline works for all heights!

For Rectangular body types (those who are similarly proportioned to thin girls but with bigger bones: wider hips and broader shoulders), try to accentuate your waist to give yourself a bit of a curve.  You can probably achieve the illusion of an hour glass figure with the right waistline; get something that nips in at your thinnest point and isn’t overly embellished, as this will add a lot of bulk.  Long or short hems will flatter you, so if you love your legs, show them off!  An open neckline will look great with your broad shoulders too.

A sweetheart neckline is not only gorgeous, it adds curves

For Apple shaped body types (those that have a full bust and have a round middle, usually with thin legs), fabric will play a key role in how your dress looks on you.  Go for something that nips in at the waist and doesn’t cling to every curve; avoid jersey and thin fabrics and go for something a bit more substantial and structured like taffeta, cotton, even linen, basically anything thick and woven.  Embellishments will also help hide extra bits you don’t want visible. A-line shapes and those with an empire waist work great and will draw more attention to your bust.  Dresses with a tight corset and a full skirt will be the most flattering and will work wonders!

The classic “princess” dress

For Pear shapes (those with small shoulders and bigger hips), almost any neckline will look great on you, and you can get away with a more revealing and provocative neckline than girls with a bigger bust.  A detailed bodice is a great way to add shape and definition to the bust and make it appear larger; details such as rusching, beadwork, ruffles, or embroidery will be great.  You can either keep the bottom simpler or go for an embellished bottom (if the top is also embellished), either will look great.  Show off your legs if you love them, otherwise a long hemline will help elongate your figure and slim you down.

Detailed prints can shape your figure

For Hour Glass figures (those with a substantial bust and hips and a nipped in waist), almost any dress shape will look good on you because your natural curves and small waist are easy to accentuate!  Show off your figure with a form fitting sheath or ball-gown type dress.  Embellishments at the bust are always flattering for you, and a higher neckline will help you feel more secure and will keep you from being overly revealing.

Don’t forget about movement, a dress that moves with you is eye catching and beautiful
