Overview

The Fashion Class offers fabulous fashion design and sewing classes, camps and birthday parties for children & teens ages 6 - 17.

We believe in hands-on learning by making, especially when it comes to the creative arts. Fashion design and sewing, though very technical, is a process with no one set of rules or style – just look at the runways today!

The Fashion Class aims to teach children and teens the art of sewing, design and the business of fashion through project based learning. Creativity is always on the lesson plan and students (and their parents) can see progression via their own actual creations. Through specialized projects and curriculum, developed just for The Fashion Class, our students learn the process of creative design and sewing.

Fashion is a 3-Dimensional art form and a sewer’s skills are perfected over time. That is why our projects change frequently, so that student’s can continue to develop their abilities and learn new techniques along with making new garments.

So journey with us on your child’s creative endeavor, we promise there will be hands-on creativity and a lot of fun!

The Basics

We offer Classes, Camps, Birthday Parties and Workshops that teach children and teens the basics of sewing, fashion design, illustration and entrepreneurship.

Classes run after school and on weekends throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring. Children’s sewing classes end with a free fashion show for parents to watch their child proudly walk the runway in their very own creations. Camps run during all major school holidays, breaks and throughout the summer. Our kid-friendly sewing projects change each season so that students can continue with classes and camps to perfect their sewing skills.

Child-aged programs are for ages 6-12. Kids and tweens work independently on their own projects and at their own pace. Apparel projects are sized to fit, we encourage students to try on their projects throughout the process. We also encourage creativity through the choosing of fabric and decoration of completed projects.

Teen programs allow for independent design. The Fashion Class doesn’t set the projects but allows older students 13-17 to sketch their own designs that our instructors assist them in creating. Teen classes end with a photo shoot so students can document work for their portfolio.

The Fashion Class students take home what they’ve made throughout the course and all supplies are included in the class fee.

Growing with The Fashion Class

The Fashion Class’ students love coming back year after year for new and exciting apparel projects.

We recommend starting with a beginners sewing course for kids, with on-going registration your child can join at any time. Students complete three projects that teach them the basics of using the sewing machine so they’re ready for our signature sewing class; Fashion Design and Sewing.

Fashion Design and Sewing runs during the fall, winter and spring. Projects change each term so students learn new techniques. One semester may focus more on woven fabric and the next on knits, or a project will use elastic and another will include a zipper. The possibilities in fashion design are endless!

Once students have completed at least three consecutive Fashion Design and Sewing terms they are welcome to move up to our advanced sewing class Pattern & Stitch. Pattern & Stitch focuses on the use of commercial patterns to create garments. Reading a commercial pattern is like reading a map – there is an entire language of new symbols to understand!

Our final step in the sewing progression is to our self-design program, depending on your child’s age, they may enter Fashion Designer or our Teen Fashion Design & Sewing. Both allow students to sketch their own design, then pattern and sew their creations.

Aside from sewing we offer several  “add-on” classes designed to complete your child’s fashion experience. Classes like Fashion Illustration, Creating a Fashion Brand, Entrepreneurship, Styling and Making a Magazine give insight into the business and design side of the industry with fun, project based lessons.

Aside from sewing we offer several  “add-on” design classes designed to complete your child’s fashion experience. Our History

In 2009 founder Kerri Quigley began to teach a small sewing class in NYC. The recession had hit the fashion industry and steady work was difficult to find, teaching seemed like an interesting substitute. After a few classes Kerri realized she absolutely loved sharing her passion for fashion with children. Shortly thereafter The Fashion Class was created in her home town of Brooklyn NY.

Today The Fashion Class operates in the Garment Center of Manhattan (since 2011) and Merrick, Long Island (since 2014) with affiliate studios across the NY boroughs and Nassau county. We offer enrichment programs for public and private schools, home school groups, libraries and girl scouts. Our teaching staff are all true designers with degrees in art, fashion and design who have worked in the in fashion industry.

The Fashion Class has been featured in Time Out NY Kids, NY Magazine, Pix 11 news and NY1 where we’ve been named a NYC parent’s pick!

The Fashion Class is a Singer Sewing Machine sponsored studio. Students at TFC work on Singer Quantum Stylist Computerized Sewing Machines. These sewing machines are easy to use, are equipped with finger guards and cool features like speed control and embroidery!

About Our Founder

kerriqKerri Quigley grew up in Brooklyn NY and began her fashion “career” by making clothing with fabric scraps and a hot glue gun. Her grandmother taught her to sew so that her creations would last. Always wanting to make things; she sold jewelry and bell bottoms to her friends in junior high and began a women’s lounge wear  line during her time studying business and fashion at Parsons the New School for Design. Despite working with Bloomingdales and Teen Vogue her clothing line closed after five seasons. After working in various areas of design; from plus-size to pets she discovered her passion for teaching sewing & design. Never a stranger to the excitement of entrepreneurship, she created The Fashion Class in 2010. Inspired by her style icon Betsey Johnson, who’s fun-loving creations and attitude are refreshing in fashion, Kerri always keeps an eye towards fun (and her 12 yr old fashion-obsessed self) when designing lessons and projects for The Fashion Class.
